Saw V Arriving in 2009?

Saw VReady for more Saw sequels, horror fans? Lionsgate sure hopes so.

Bloody-Disgusting reports that Saw V and Saw VI are officially a go, will be filmed back-to-back, and will be directed by David Hackl. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the screenwriting team behind Saw IV, will be back for the next two sequels.

Those sequels, however, might take a little longer to ooze out of the studio pipeline — according to Bloody-Disgusting‘s report, “Lionsgate is planning on skipping October 2008 for the next Saw film, although that news is yet to be confirmed.” For filmgoers experiencing Jigsaw fatigue, this will no doubt come as a relief; from a business perspective, however, it seems like a questionable decision. Horror trends being as cyclical as they are, it would seem to be in Lionsgate’s best interests to continue exploiting the franchise annually until it runs completely out of steam.

The question of the series’ continued drawing power will be largely answered by the box-office performance of Saw IV, which reaches theaters next week. Place your bets here!
